Understanding Our Past
The media attention that Kim Davis has received recently is
such a disservice to the founding principles of our government and
constitution. A basic principle, for
anyone who knows our history and our constitution, is that of separation of
church and state. Our founding fathers
thought out this principle very carefully given their background with the
Church of England and its implementation in the colonies.
There was a time, early in our history, when for those early
founders of the colonies who did not follow the teachings of the Church of
England and were not active members in their local church could have their
children taken from them, could be driven from their villages/towns, could be
ostracized and shunned, because their beliefs were different. With that in mind Jefferson, Madison, et al.
developed the concept of separation of church and state to establish and
protect religious freedom. What Kim
Davis and her supporters have done is to totally ignore the basic premise of
our government and essentially forced their religious beliefs on those who
believe differently.
Regardless of your religious beliefs, every US citizen is
entitled to the same freedoms and rights.
Whether you are gay, straight, black, white, protestant, catholic, Islamic,
or Jewish we are all protected by the Constitution and Bill of Rights. No one, and especially those who are employed
by the government, can legally take it upon themselves to withhold freedoms or
rights from another. If an action is
against their religious beliefs then they should step down from that office or
employment.
The twisted claim that she is being denied her religious beliefs
is simply that….a twisted response by a zealot who happens to hold a public
office. She can believe whatever she
wants, but she cannot deny rights to other citizens because of her religious
beliefs….what of theirs?
If you disagree do not respond to this…simply go study US
history. Understand why the constitution
and Bill of Rights were written the way they were. Keep separate government from religion so
that we all may worship and live our lives as we choose. It is not a matter of whether or not we agree
with gay marriage, it is a matter of freedom and liberty for all.
