Hallsted Reunion a Hit!!

August 14-17 found 51 Hallsted's of one form or another at Hueston Woods State Park just outside of Cincinnati. It was a wonderful time!!! Weather was perfect and the resort was superb. The weekend started off with dinner Friday night at the Lodge Dining Room. 24 joined in and kicked off the weekend with good food and lots of welcome hugs and kisses.

A handful of relatives were staying at the Lodge, Uncle Bob, Nancy and Bob Mitchell were in a cabin and Nancy and Bob's daughter, Leah and her family were in a second cabin. Everyone else was camping at the Park campground.

Saturday morning found Gayle, Kristen, Helen and Royce over a hot campfire cooking breakfast for 33. Joann, Jackie and Abby showed up just as we were getting started and then Barb Symon, her daughter Megan and husband Bob came in just a little later. We missed Don and Kevin who are regulars for the Saturday morning breakfast, but weather permitted them some haying time that had not been available earlier. Everyone agreed the breakfast was delicious as always and a big thanks to the Burroughs and Burton's for their efforts!!

Pontoon boat rides started at 10 AM and we had rides at 11 AM, 12 Noon, and 1 PM. A 1 hour tour around Acton Lake with everyone signing up for the ride of their choice. A big thanks goes out to Tom and Lennie Satchell who helped with the logistics of getting the boats out, back in and everyone on and off safely. While others were out on the boats, Leah and husband Frank took their two oldest out for a kayak tour of the lake. Not sure how far they went, but they were gone a good while and came back totally wet!!!! It was a good day for wet since the day was very hot and humid.

Next on the agenda was Saturday evening at the Reds game. Eighteen of us made the drive from the Park to the Stadium. Luckily the heat had subsided and it wasn't bad. We had excellent seats along the 3rd base line and got to see the Hallsted Family Reunion welcomed on the scoreboard. Unfortunately it was not a winning night for the Reds. The score was pretty one sided at 10-1 at the 7th inning stretch, so we packed up and headed out for our 1.5 hour drive.

Sunday morning was church at Otterbein and the lunch there also. More family dropped in for lunch that could not make it to Hueston Woods. Dave's youngest Joanna and family, Jerry and Jean's sons Jerry, Jr., and Bob and their daughter Becky. Lot's of good visiting and good food were shared through early afternoon.

Then a quick trip back to Hueston Woods and I made it to the golf course on time to meet up with John Weiss, Katie's husband and his friend Steve as well as Gayle's son Kevin made a nice foursome. Lovely afternoon for golf after the mid-day heat subsided.

I took off after 18 holes (the other 3 played a few more holes) and met up with David, Lisa, Catherine, Steve and Elaine and we headed into Oxford to find an open restaurant late on a Sunday evening in a college town that hadn't started back up yet. We were very lucky to find a Bistro still open with very good food. We closed the place down after lots of laughter and good food.

By Monday morning breakfast Leah and Frank had left, as well as Lisa and Catherine. Early on Sunday Carrie and her husband and children had left and Jerry and Jean didn't return after Otterbein so our numbers were dwindling. There were 14 of us for Monday morning breakfast and again it was a wonderful closing event.

There is talk of a return to Hueston Woods in 2011, so watch for future surveys and e-mails to gather your thoughts!!!

Special thanks to Tom and Lennie Satchell for their help with the boats and for providing delicious pizzas for Sunday lunch. Also to Helen and Royce Burton and Gayle and Don Burroughs for Saturday breakfast and Sunday lunch.

Big hugs and kisses to everyone who came and made the weekend so wonderful!!!

Oh Dear, Did I Jinx Us???

This AM a horrible storm came through and created havoc!!!! See Pete's notes that he posted on Facebook.

"This mornings storms wiped out 70%-80% of our Silver King, 50%-60% of the Ambrosia, 30%-40% of the remaining Bodacious corn crop. Now just a tangled mat and less than knee high. Round 2 is in the county and bearing down on us, does not look good on the radar at all. I may skip making new "CORN FOR SALE" signs today."

So...time will tell if we have any produce to sell. As Pete said....It's the farmers life!!!

Farmer Sue & Pete

After 12 years of living in Pleasant Plain, OH on 10 acres, for the first time this year Pete and I have decided to try growing produce for sale. So on this blog, for the growing season, we'll keep you posted as to what we have currently available and the price. Check back weekly as new items will go on the list and off the list.

We are willing to deliver or meet you some place, depending on where in the Greater Cincinnati area you are located. Pete is always out and about with his business and with me driving to Blue Ash daily for work, we should be able to hook up.

Also, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday we will have a roadside stand on State Route 28, directly across the road the from Eagles Nest Golf Course. Either Pete or I will be there. The hours will be....

  • Friday - 3 PM - 6 PM
  • Saturday 11 AM - 6 PM
  • Sunday 1 PM - 6 PM
If you want to stop by and pick up, just call us before you stop by to be sure we are around. If you are reading this you should have our phone number. If not, e-mail me at shallsted@tds.net.

Check us out if you live in the area!!!!

So, for the week of August 3 we have

  • Cucumbers 2/$1.00
  • Corn 1 doz/$4. Bodacious currently. Shortly we will have 'Ambrosia' and 'Silver King'
  • Yukon Gold Potatoes - $1/lb.

In the next few weeks we will have: several kinds of Peppers, Tomatoes, and maybe another picking of Green Beans off our plants.
